OLMC Religious Education
8330 Lewis Avenue
Temperance, MI 48182Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (Preschool)
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to the religious formation of children. It is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. Children gather in an "atrium," a room prepared for them, which contains simple yet beautiful materials that they use.
You may be wondering how these materials help the religious life of children? If an adult hears a beautiful passage from the Bible, the adult might take a Bible, find the passage, and read it slowly again and again. But a little child, too young to read, needs another way. In an atrium the child can ponder a biblical passage or a prayer from the liturgy by taking the material for that text and working with it - placing wood figures of sheep in a sheepfold of the Good Shepherd, setting sculpted apostles around a Last Supper table, or preparing a small altar with the furnishings used for the Eucharist.
Class attendance is important. If your child will not be in attendance for any reason, please let the teacher know in advance or call the Religious Education Office at 734-847-1725.

Religious Education Staff
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Religious Education staff is entirely volunteer, except for the Director of Religious Education. Presently, there are 36 Catechists training through the Monroe Vicariate Catechist Formation sessions, offered twice each year. Catechists are certified after taking 20 courses on topics ranging from faith development and prayer to classroom management and techniques. Anyone interested in becoming a Catechist is invited to attend these training sessions. For more information, call the Religious Ed. office at 734-847-1725.
Grade 1-8 General Policies
All students enrolled in the religious education programs will be required to:
- First and foremost attend class and participate to the best of his/her abilities.
- Behave in a Christian manner at all times showing respect and being cooperative with adults and other students.
- Have no more than four absences from class. This applies to grade levels 1-8. If there are extenuating circumstances, the parent must talk to the Director of Religious Education (DRE) or the coordinator in the absence of the DRE. Letters will be sent home concerning two or more absences for students in grade 1-8 regardless of the reason.
- Provide a signed note from a parent if absent from class. If the child is ill or it is a last-minute absence, the parent is asked to call the office before class begins, otherwise someone from the office may call the home to make sure everything is all right.
- Provide a signed note from a parent if required to leave a class early. The parent is to go to the office to sign the student out, stating the date, time, and purpose for leaving early before the child is called down. We are required to do this.
- Attend and participate at all scheduled liturgical events and class functions.
- If a child has missed a year or more of religious study, this must be discussed with the DRE.
For more information about these policies, contact the Religious Education Office at 734-847-1725.
Communication, Calendar Changes, and Notes Home
We are here to serve the religious education needs of our children, youth, and adults. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please feel free to share them with your child's Catechist or call the Religious Ed office at 847-1725, or send an email.
Each family is given a calendar of activities at the beginning of the year. Reminders of activities or changes in dates are sent home with the child. We ask that all parents check their child's folder after each class for letters, classwork, etc.
Child Safety/Abuse Policies
Child abuse is of serious concern. We comply with the law to ensure the welfare of a child. Any staff member or catechist who suspects a child to be the victim of abuse will notify the Director of Religious Education who will then notify the pastor. We are required by law to report suspected child abuse and we will also follow diocesan policy on such matters.
Classroom Rules & Discipline Policy
The Religious Education staff has posted a list of classroom rules along with the procedure for discipline. Download a 51k PDF document of the Classroom Rules and Discipline Policy to read and review with your child. Print and sign the form, and send it to class with your child within the first two weeks of the school year.
Fire Safety Procedures
Each classroom has a map of the building with the escape route marked on it in red. Fire drills will be conducted twice a year to acquaint the chidren with the procedures. All children and adults will gather in the parking lot away from the building.
Medication
The religious education office is not allowed to dispense any medication, even with the parent's permission. If a child needs medication, the parent must be here to administer it. We simply are not allowed to do it.
Homework
Very little homework is assigned. We do ask that if your child does bring home some paperwork that you, the parent, supervise its completion.
Class Cancellations
Religious Education classes do not follow the cancellation schedule for Bedford Public Schools. Decisions for class cancellations will be determined by 4:00. If more than two classes are canceled because of inclement weather, they will be made up at the end of the year. In the event of increment weather or emergencies, families should listen to local TV and radio stations. If you are in question of a cancellation, please call the Religious Education office at 734-847-1725. The broadcast stations to check in event of a cancellation are:
Radio Stations
Television Stations
KISS FM Channel 24 YES FM Channel 13 TOWER 98 K-100 101.5 The RiverDismissal (after class)
We are very concerned for the safety of our children. We ask that parents instruct their children in proper safe behavior when leaving the building. Please be aware of the No Parking areas along the curb. Parent who are in church on Sunday morning must take their children to Sunday School class and pick them up afterwards.
Progress Reports
Progress reports will be given out in grades 1 - 6 every 8 weeks. We ask that parents have any questions, please call the Religious Ed. office or email the Director.
Visitors & Hall Monitors
Parents and other visitors are always welcome to attend a class, but are required--for the safety of all children--to check in with the office upon entering the building. Most catechists would prefer prior notice so as not to disrupt their lesson. Hall monitors will be stationed throughout the building to check for hall passes. Parents and grandparents are invited to volunteer to become hall monitors on a monthly basis. Call the office at 734-847-1725 to volunteer.
Rights of Non-Custodial Parents
The parish catechetical program abides by the provisions of the Buckley Amendment with respect to the rights of the non-custodial parents. In the absence of a court order to the contrary, we will provide the non-custodial parent with unofficial copies of records if requested. If there is a court order specifying that there is to be no information given, it is the responsibility of the custodial parent to provide the Director of Religious Education with an official copy of the court order.
